Hokie ClubCHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team lead all three duals after day one of their tri-meet with Cincinnati and the Rutgers women’s squad on Friday. The No. 25 men lead the Bearcats, 125-42, while the No. 23 H2Okie women lead Cincinnati, 122.5-44.5, and Rutgers, 93-74.
The meet resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the senior day ceremony occurring before the final event of the day, the 400 free relay.
“Strong start for us tonight. I really enjoyed watching our team interact and the energy on the deck was very high,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “Some of our newcomers look strong - Leah Rogers, Chloe Hicks, Hassler Carroll and Simon Shi - are really emerging for us. Miranda Eberle on the boards has been strong as well.:
PERFORMERS OF THE DAY
-The H2Okies saw some impressive performances from their relays. The women’s A relay in the 200 free registered a first place time of 1:34.47 which was only a second off their seed time. In total, Tech won three of the four relays on the day.
-Junior Justin Edwards swam a 56.04 to take first in the 100 breast and freshman Simon Shi followed with a PR 56.73.
-Freshman Hassler Carroll and junior Chris Grimmett-Norris finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 fly. Carroll swam a 151.60 and Norris finished with a 1:52.36
-All five men’s divers finished in the top five in the one meter with junior T.J. Shinholser leading the way with a score of 349.40.
OTHER NOTABLE SWIMS
-Sophomore Ashlynn Peters finished second against divers from Rutgers and Cincinnati in the three meter with a score of 313.55.
-In the 200 back, freshman Chloe Hicks turned in a strong swim with a time of 2:00.42 to finish second.
-Freshman Miranda Eberle set a new career-high in the three meter with a score of 287.40 to place fourth out of 10 divers.
-Senior Laura Schwartz nearly set a new personal best in the 100 breast with a second place time of 1:03.84. M.J Ulrich placed third with a 1:05.27.
-Seniors Fiona Donnelly took first in the 200 IM and classmate Jessica Hespeler won the 500 free to help the H2Okies to early leads in the meet score.
