Trio of Hokies earn ACC honors after win over West Virginia

GREENSBORO – The ACC announced Tuesday that three Virginia Tech football student-athletes earned ACC Player of the Week honors following Sunday’s 31-24 win over No. 22 West Virginia. QB Josh Jackson was named Rookie of the Week, while LB Andrew Motuapuaka earned Linebacker of the Week honors and WR Cam Phillips took home the Receiver of the Week award.

QB Josh Jackson – ACC Rookie of the Week
Jackson helped Virginia Tech retain the Black Diamond Trophy after accounting for 336 yards of total offense and two total TDs in the No. 21 Hokies’ 31-24 victory over No. 22 West Virginia. He threw for 235 yards and ran for 101 yards, becoming the first Hokies QB to pass for 200+ yards and rush for 100+ yards since Logan Thomas had 224 passing yards and 101 rushing yards vs. Duke (10/26/13).

On the ground, Jackson had a five-yard touchdown run and registered a long rush of 46 yards that set up the go-ahead score with 6:30 left in the game.

LB Andrew Motuapuaka – ACC Linebacker of the Week
Motuapuaka led the Hokies with 12 tackles (nine solo) while posting a sack and two quarterback hurries in the victory. With the Mountaineers driving, Motuapuaka sacked QB Will Grier for a loss of two yards with 22 seconds left, forcing WVU to use their final timeout. Seven of Motuapuaka’s 12 tackles came in the second half. It was the 11th double-digit tackle performance of his career.

WR Cam Phillips – ACC Receiver of the Week
Phillips registered seven catches for a career-high 138 receiving yards in the victory. His 28-yard pass reception in the first quarter advanced Tech to the West Virginia one-yard line and set up Virginia Tech’s first score of the game. His 32-yard TD catch was the 11th of his career, which is tied for 11th in program history, and put Tech ahead 24-17 with 2:02 in the third quarter. His outing against the Mountaineers saw him move into fifth place in the Tech record book with 2,201 career receiving yards, passing Antonio Freeman. He also moved into sole possession of third place on Tech’s career receptions chart with 172, bypassing Danny Coale.
