Hokie ClubATLANTA - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team saw senior Jessica Hespeler and freshman Reka Gyorgy re-write the record book twice on Tuesday at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.
After both swimmers broke school records in the prelims, Gyorgy set a new program best in the A final of the 200 IM while Hespeler swam the fastest time in school history in the A final of the 500 free. Both swimmers placed fourth in their events. The H2Okies are currently seventh in the championship standings
After breaking a seven year old school record in the 500 free prelims earlier in the day, Hespeler broke the record again in the A finals with a time of 4:39.40. Hespeler’s fourth place finish was the highest individual finish of her career at ACCs and her finals time also set a new personal best.
Gyorgy broke her own school record in the A final with a time 1:57.22. Senior Fiona Donnelly meanwhile finished sixth with a time of 1:58.46.
Tech finished up the day with the fifth fastest time in school history in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.28. Freshman Jenna Beattie started off the night by finishing fourth in the C final of the 500 free with a new personal best of 4:49.05. Her time is also the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 500 free.
Sophomore diver Ashlynn Peters, who became only the second women’s ACC gold medalist in program history after taking first in the three meter event last night, placed 11th overall in the prelims of the one meter.
The H2Okies return tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with the prelims of the 400 IM. Tomorrow night’s finals will against stream live on WatchESPN via the ACC Digital Network starting at 6 p.m.
