BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program returns to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center this weekend where the H2Okies will host Cincinnati and Rutgers from Jan 20-21.
The meet kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday with 200 free relay and the Saturday’s action begins at 10 a.m. The senior day ceremony honoring 12 H2Okies will take place on Saturday.
The H2Okies returned to the CSCAA coaches poll this week with the men (6-1, 3-1 ACC) checking in at No. 25 and the women (4-3, 1-3 ACC) slotted in a tie for 23rd. Both squads are coming off tough losses at nationally ranked Virginia last weekend. Tech was led by their men’s and women’s divers who nearly swept all four diving events.
AT A GLANCE: CINCINNATI AND RUTGERS
- The Tech men are 3-1 all-time and the women are 2-2 all-time against the Bearcats in a series that dates back to 1990.
- The two programs last met on Nov. 2, 2013 when the H2Okies took home two victories.
- Last year’s dual meet with the Bearcats and Wright State at Cincinnati was canceled due to weather.
- Rutgers women’s swimming and diving team will face against the H2Okies for the first time this weekend. The Scarlet Knight’s divers competed at the H2Okie Fall Invitational earlier this season.
PETERS TAKES SECOND ACC DIVER OF THE WEEK HONOR
- Sophomore diver Ashlynn Peter was named ACC Women’s Diver of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday after a standout weekend at UVA.
- Peters took first in three meter with a personal best score of 349.27 and scored a season high 311.48 in a second place finish in the one meter.
SCHIESL HAS CAREER WEEKEND AT UVA
- Sophomore diver Ben Schiesl swept the diving events on the men’s side against the No. 15 Cavaliers over the weekend.
- Schiesl set personal bests in the in both the one meter and three meter diving, earning 18 total points for the H2Okie men.
- He scored a 388.77 in the one meter and a 405.00 in the three meter.
WELCOME, REKA!
- Freshman Reka Gyorgy will officially suit up this weekend for the first time as a member of the H2Okies.
- Gyorgy competed at the 2016 Olympics for her native Hungary and took home three gold medals in the 100 back, 200 back and 400 medley relay at the 2016 Hungarian Swimming Championships.
