Tech opens ACC slate at home versus Boston College

Virginia Tech football returns home for its next two games and begins its homestand Saturday with the team’s first ACC game of the year against Boston College. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. kick and can be seen on ESPNU. It’s also Hall of Fame and Military Appreciation Weekend – see below for more information.

ACC PLAY BEGINS VS. BOSTON COLLEGE

  • The Hokies are 1-1 under Justin Fuente after a 36-13 win vs. Liberty (9/3) & a 45-24 loss vs. Tennessee (9/10). The Battle at Bristol drew 156,990 fans, the largest attendance ever for a NCAA or NFL game.
  • The Hokies open ACC play against 1-1 Boston College. The Eagles lost a 17-14 decision vs. Georgia Tech (9/3) in a game played in Dublin and registered a 26-7 win at UMass (9/10) to snap a nine-game losing streak.
  • Tech is 8-4 in ACC openers since joining the league in 2004, including a 19-10 win at Boston College (9/25/10).
  • BC is seeking to snap a nine-game ACC losing streak and record its first conference win since posting a 28-7 victory vs. Syracuse (11/29/14).
  • Tech’s last five ACC games have been decided by an average of 3.2 ppg

WHAT TO WATCH FOR VIRGINIA TECH

  • Tech’s defense has forced 15 opponent drives to go three-and-out (or less).
  • VT has allowed seven offensive TDs. Four of those opponent drives have started inside Hokies’ territory, including three starting at the VT 10-yard line or closer.
  • Only one of those opponent scoring drives has consumed over 75 yards.
  • Opponents have had 58.6% (34 of 58) of their points set up by VT turnovers.

HELLO, LEFTY & OTHER BC NUGGETS

  • Boston College offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler returns to Blacksburg with the Eagles after spending the past three seasons (2013-15) in the same capacity with the Hokies.
  • QB Patrick Towles is a graduate transfer from Kentucky, where he played in 28 games (22 starts), completing 427 of 759 passes for 5,099 yards with 24 TDs and 24 INTs.
  • LB Matt Milano set a career high with nine tackles vs. VT (10/31/15). After two games, he has 14 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and 2.0 sacks in 2016.
  • WRs Isaiah Ford & Cam Phillips, RBs Sam Rodgers & Travon McMilian and TE Bucky Hodges accounted for 78.6% (3,938 yds) and 72.1% (31 TDs) of Tech’s offensive

HALL OF FAME WEEKEND

  • Six former Virginia Tech student-athletes will be inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame this weekend. CLICK HERE for the full release.
  • Three former football greats will be among those honorees: DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Jones and Ashley Lee.
  • Saturday will also mark VT’s annual Military Appreciation Game, saluting all our military personnel past and present, as well as Tech’s rich military tradition. Fans are also encouraged to wear white for White Effect.
