GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s swimming and diving team moved up a spot in the standings on Friday night led by medal performances from Klaudia Nazieblo and Weronika Paluszek.
“The energy from our women has been outstanding. I’m so excited about Kladuia Nazieblo in her first individual event for the meet and she got silver and she’s got her best events ahead and she’s set herself up nicely. Weronika Paluszek, Klaudia's fellow Polish teammate, had a great day too breaking her own school record. It’s so awesome to see a senior leading us not only in the pool but out of the pool as well with the positive energy she’s bringing. The 400-medley relay was a great way to finish the meet, the girls are cheering so hard and we’re in a great team race. We’re going to do everything we can to try to move up the board and tomorrow’s our best day,” head coach Ned Skinner said.
Nazieblo earned a silver medal after swimming a 4:07.63 in the 400 IM. Her time scored 28 points and she won a silver medal in her first individual event of the 2016 ACC Championships. Fiona Donnelly was also in the A final and she earned the team 22 points after swimming a 4:14.87. Laura Schwartz swam a 4:15.99 in the event and earned 15 points.
Paluszek earned a bronze medal in the 100 breast as she clocked a 59.37. Mackenzie Stewart swam a 1:01.85 to narrowly finish third in the B final of the 100 breast and earned 16 points.
Maggie Gruber finished fifth in the A final of the 100 fly with a time of 52.40 and got 25 points. Jessica Hespeler finished seventh in the seventh in the 200 free A final to earn 23 points. Alice Boutant and Gabrielle Bishop also combined to score nine points in the 200 free.
Auriane de Premilhat and Holly Harper earned a combined 11.5 points in the 100 back for the Hokies. Tech closed out the evening with the 400 medley A relay and a fourth place finish to earn 52 points.
Tech will continue the 2016 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly as well as the men’s and women’s platform diving. The finals for those events will begin at 6 p.m. with the addition of the final heat of the 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
The finals will again be televised from 6-8 p.m. on ESPN3.
