LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams wrapped up day one of their meet with Kentucky and LSU on Friday night.
The men are tied with Kentucky 75-75 while the women trail the Wildcats 80-70. The men are beating LSU 91-56 while the women trail the Tigers 97-53.
"I am pleased with our tenacity coming off our intense training phase. Jessica Hespeler is so gritty and Brandon Fiala and Ben Schiesl showed huge poise today. We are in position for an exciting day tomorrow," head coach Ned Skinner said.
For the women, Hespeler won the 1,650 free in 16:46.73. Klaudia Nazieblo swam a 1:58.23 to come in second place in the 200 fly. Weronika Paluszek won the 200 back.
The men’s 400 free A relay came in first place with a time of 3:01.25, just ahead of the A relay from LSU. Robert Owen and Sean Workman finished second and third in the 200 back. Fiala won the 200 back with a time of 2:00.64, winning the event by almost two seconds.
In diving, in the men’s 1-meter, Schiesl took first place with Logan Stevens coming in second. Mauro Castro-Silva finished in fourth. Castro-Silva, Stevens and Schiesl finished second through fourth place in the 3-meter event.
In women’s diving, Ashlynn Peters led the way as she finished second in the women’s 3-meter event and third in the 1-meter.
The meet will resume at 9 a.m. again tomorrow.
