Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams completed the first day of competition in a meet with the University of Virginia and Towson University on Friday night at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Through 18 events, the Virginia Tech men lead No. 21 Virginia 101-66 and are ahead of Towson 131-35. The women trail No. 3 Virginia 120-47 and are beating Towson 122-45.
“I was pleased with our team’s competitive fire tonight. Our men surged early and maintained the energy. Lucas Bureau, Brandon Fiala and Mauro Castro-Silva were rock solid. The women were led by Ashlynn Peters and Klaudia Nazieblo. Maggie Gruber continues to lead us in and out of the pool. I am excited to see us go after it in the morning,” head coach Ned Skinner said.
Virginia Tech’s A relay in the men’s 200 free took first place with a time of 1:21.53. Brandon Fiala won the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.94 while Norbert Szabo finished third in the event. Fiala also won the 100 breast in a time of 55.50. Michal Szuba finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:29.81. Robert Owen and Sean Workman finished first and second in the 200 back. Owen won with a time of 1:47.29 while Workman swam a 1:48.06. Lucas Bureau won the 100 free in 45.21.
The A relay from Virginia Tech finished second in the women’s 200 free. Jessica Hespeler took second place in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.95. Klaudia Nazieblo finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.74. Weronika Paluszek placed third in the 100 breaststroke.
In diving, Peters and Castro-Silva each won their event.
The H2Okies will be back in the pool at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning with the senior ceremony starting ten minutes before the meet begins.
