Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department awarded letter jackets to first-time Monogram winners at the department’s inaugural letter jacket ceremony on Feb. 2 in the McConnell Auditorium inside the Merryman Athletic Center.
More than 70 student-athletes, cheerleaders, managers and trainers, were joined by former student-athletes, coaches and administration in recognition of earning their first Monogram.
The event was sponsored the Monogram Club, which is an organization that seeks to honor, connect and recognize former student-athletes and their commitment to Virginia Tech Athletics. Virginia Tech Athletics Hall of Famer and Monogram Club member Dick Arnold (track & field, c/o 1956) was on hand to announce this year’s recipients.
“We are proud of the achievements our student-athletes make in the classroom and on the field of competition,” said Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock. “We are hopeful this ceremony will not only honor the athletic achievements, but foster a sense of Hokie Pride with the Monogram Club and our former and current student-athletes.”
“It is a privilege to play a sport at Virginia Tech,” said Michael Brewer of the football team, “and receive a letter and celebrate it with all of our other student-athletes.”
Current senior women’s soccer player Kelsey Loupee addressed this year’s letterwinners and encouraged them by saying, “To be a Hokie student-athlete means you are a part of something bigger than yourself. You are a member of a team, a community, and a nation … Hokie Nation. So when you put on your letter jacket, just like when you put on your uniform, remember who you are and what you are a part of … you are a Hokie!”
This will become an annual tradition where the fall award winners will be honored in the spring and the spring award winners will be honored in the fall.
