Nine Hokies earn bids to NCAA Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. Nine Virginia Tech track and field athletes will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark., as the NCAA announced the national meet qualifiers on Tuesday.

Five Hokie women will represent Tech at the national meet. Senior Brittany Pryor, junior Kristi Castlin and sophomore Dorotea Habazin all won regional titles at last weekend’s NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C., to earn automatic bids. Castlin captured the 100-meter hurdles crown, while Habazin won the hammer throw. Pryor earned the gold in the discus and finished third in the hammer throw.

Senior Natalie Sherbak and junior Asia Washington will also run for the Tech women at the NCAA Championships. Sherbak provisionally qualified in the 10,000-meters, an event that is not run at the regional meet, with the 22nd-best time in the country, clocking a 34:11.50 at the Stanford Invitational on May 2. Washington will run in the 400-meter hurdles in Fayetteville. The Piscataway, N.J., native finished sixth at the East Regional, but held the fifth-fastest time in the nation entering last weekend to claim the at-large spot.

On the men’s side, four field athletes will represent the Hokies at the meet. Sophomore Marcel Lomnicky won the hammer throw at the regional meet to secure the automatic berth. The Nitra, Slovakia native currently owns the third-best throw in the nation, a toss of 235-03 achieved at the Texas Relays.

Three other Tech men notched automatic bids into the national meet last weekend. Freshman Matthias Treff launched a 212-10 in the javelin to take third place at the East Regional, in only his second competition of the outdoor season. In pole vault action, sophomore Hunter Hall and junior Yavgeniy Olhovsky placed third and fifth, respectively, in the event in Greensboro, N.C.

The NCAA Championships will kick off on Wednesday, June 10 and will conclude on Saturday June 13. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the meet.
