BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s track and field squad announced the addition of thrower and Slovakian junior record holder in the hammer throw, Marcel Lomnicky to the program on Wednesday. Lomnicky joined the team earlier this month.
Lomnicky, a Nitra, Slovakia native, holds the Slovakian junior record in the hammer throw with a personal best of 238-05, a mark that is only two centimeters shy of four-time NCAA Champion Spyridon Jullien’s school record.
"Obviously Marcel is an incredible sign for our men's program as we continue to improve our placing at the NCAA Championships," Associate Head Track and Field Coach Greg Jack said. "Marcel will continue to strengthen the tradition we have in the throwing events here at Virginia Tech."
In 2007, Lomnicky placed third at the European Under 23 Championships in the hammer throw, and won the bronze medal in the event at the World Junior Championships in 2006.
The Hokies will take this weekend off, before traveling to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National Invitational on January 30-31. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the meet.
