ATLANTA, Ga. – Sophomore Dorotea Habazin broke her own school record in the women’s hammer throw to highlight the Virginia Tech track and field squad’s first day of the Georgia Tech Invitational on the George C. Griffin Track in Atlanta, Ga., on Friday.
Habazin highlighted the meet with her launch of 216-06 to take first in the event. The Zagreb, Croatia native shattered her own Tech record of 213-11, set at the ACC Championships in 2008. Senior Brittany Pryor finished second in the event with a season-best toss of 199-08. Both Hokies already stood regionally qualified in the hammer throw coming into the weekend.
On the men’s side, sophomore Marcel Lomnicky completed the Tech sweep of the hammer throw with a first-place toss of 233-06. Lomnicky remained undefeated in hammer throw competitions on the year, after already claiming the ACC and Texas Relays titles in the event earlier this season. Junior Igor Misljenovic placed third in the shot put with a throw 57-07.50 to cap the Hokie throwers’ day.
In sprints action, junior Kristi Castlin clocked a season-best 12.90 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles to advance to the event finals on Saturday. The Douglasville, Ga., native ran the fastest time in the field and will run at 2:40 p.m., tomorrow. Freshman Keith Ricks qualified for the finals in the men’s 100-meter dash. Ricks snagged the eighth spot in Saturday’s race with a time of 10.57.
