Two more hammer throwers regionally qualify

AUSTIN, Texas Sophomores Marcel Lomnicky and Dorotea Habazin regionally qualified in the men’s and women’s hammer throw, respectively, on Friday to highlight the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas at the Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Hokies performed well in the hammer throw on both the men’s and women’s side. Sophomore Marcel Lomnicky won his first collegiate men’s hammer throw competition with a toss of 235-03. Lomnicky, who joined the squad in January as the Slovakian junior record holder in the hammer throw, became the first Hokie male to regionally qualify on the season with the throw. The Nitra, Slovakia native’s toss also ranks as the longest toss in the country this season.

In the women’s hammer throw, sophomore Dorotea Habazin and senior Brittany Pryor placed second and fourth, respectively. Habazin threw 201-09 in her first hammer throw competition this season, while Pryor, who won the event at last week’s Weems Baskins Relay, launched a 193-00 to improve on her season best. Both Habazin and Pryor surpassed the regional-qualifying mark.

Juniors Queen Harrison and Asia Washington, battling heavy winds, both qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles tomorrow. Harrison, coming off a hamstring injury, ran a 59.37 for the third-fastest time in the prelims, and Washington clocked a 59.89 to finish seventh in the prelims. Both times came in under the regional standard.

Action continues at the Texas Relays tomorrow, beginning with the preliminaries of the women’s 4x100-meter relay at 9:30 a.m. The Hokies will also compete in the Colonial Relays tomorrow, starting at noon with the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the conclusion of the meets.
