Tech men advance on two fronts

ATHENS, Ga. - The Virginia Tech men's tennis team split up this weekend to participate in two tournaments and found much success on the first day of each event. Tech had four players advance in two divisions at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships being played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.

In Division I singles, Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 75 nationally, out dueled No. 13 seed and 103rd ranked Kiril Dimitrov (Duke), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-5, to advance to the Round of 32. Teammate Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) had a much easier time advancing with a dominating, 6-1, 6-0, win over Grega Teraz (East Tennessee State). Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) and Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) each dropped their opening matches will see consolation action on Saturday.

Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) won his opening round match in Division II cruising to a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Trenton Spinks (Georgia State), while Jonathan Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) won a tough, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, match over Tyler Mills (Kennesaw State). Preston Lemon (Sr., Roanoke, Va.) dropped his opening round Division II match, 6-2, 6-4, to Jason Wolfson (Morehead State).

The Hokies split two matches in Division I doubles as Re/Jacques won, 8-1, over Kilani/Yoshizawa (South Florida), while Corace/Delgado de Robles fell, 8-3, to Gomez/King (Georgia Tech). The freshmen duo of Daciek/Pine picked an 8-4 win in Division II doubles versus Braxton/Byrd (Davidson).

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Three players advanced to the semifinals in three different brackets at the Steve Baras Collegiate Fall Classic being played at the Champions Club. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) won two matches in A1 Singles as did Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) in the A2 Singles bracket. Zach Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) had a first round bye in B1 Singles before dropping his quarterfinal match in three sets and will play in the consolation round on Saturday. Eduardo Pinto (Jr,, San Jose, Costa Rica) received a first round bye in B2 Singles and was better down the stretch in a 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-2, win over Dakota Pate (Chattanooga) to advance to the semifinals.

Only one doubles team saw action on Friday as Pine/Pinto galloped to a 8-2 victory in A2 over Taylor Befus/William John (UNCG). Somen/Tocci received a first round bye in the A1 competition and will see their first action on Saturday.
