GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the brackets for the 2008 ACC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on April 17-20. Virginia Tech will be competing in its fourth ACC tournament.
Tech's men's team, ranked No. 29 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the fifth seed in the 12-team bracket. The Hokies are paired up to play 61st-ranked Clemson, the 12thseed in the bracket, on Thursday, April, 17 at Noon
The Hokies completed the regular season with a 14-7 overall and 6-5 ACC record. The Tigers have a 15-19 dual record and are 1-10 in conference matches.
Tech, then ranked No. 37, dropped a 4-3 match in Clemson, S.C. to the Tigers on March 21. In that contest, the Hokies lost the doubles point, then split the six singles contests. Tech's singles victories were by Albert Larregola (Sr., Lleida, Spain) at No. 1, Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Jr., Madrid, Spain) at No. 2 and Pedro Graber (So., Santiago, Chile). Two of the three singles losses were tight, three-set contests.
The winner of Thursday's match moves on to face the No. 4 seed in the championships, 30th-ranked Wake Forest on Friday, April 18 at Noon. The Demon Deacons defeated Tech, 4-3, in Blacksburg, Va. last Friday.
On Saturday, April 19, there will be two semi-final matches. The first semi-final match is slated for 10 a.m. while the second semi-final match will be played at 1 p.m. The 11 a.m. title match will conclude the conference championship on Sunday, April 20.
The Hokies, ranked No. 56, are the tenth seed in the women's bracket and are set to open the conference championship on Thursday, April 17 at noon against No. 7 seed Virginia, ranked No. 48 by the ITA.
Tech is 14-12 overall and 2-9 in the ACC while Virginia is 9-12 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
The Hokies suffered a 4-3 loss to the Cavaliers in the regular season in a Feb. 10 contest in Blacksburg, Va. Tech dropped the doubles point and split the six singles matches. Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) won her No. 2 contest while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) won at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively.
Next up for the winner of Thursday's match is a noon contest versus the No. 2 seed, ninth-ranked Duke, on Friday, April 18.
The two semi-final matches will be played on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The championships conclude with the 11 a.m. title match on Sunday, April 20.
