COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 decision Sunday afternoon over the Maryland Terrapins in a match played at the Tennis Center at College Park. Tech, ranked No. 50 nationally, improves to 14-7 and 2-5 in the ACC while Maryland falls to 3-13 overall and 0-6 in the ACC.
Tech swept the doubles competition for the first point then captured five of the six singles matches for the victory.
In singles, Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) picked up a 7-5, 6-4, victory over Karin Lundmark at No. 2, while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) won 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3, in her No. 3 match versus Maggie MacKeever. Elsewhere, J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 4 versus Lisa Miller, Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands) won her No. 5 match against Julia Huschke, 7-6 (7), 6-1, and Holly Johnson (Fr. Tallahassee, Fla.) took the No. 6 contest, 7-6 (4), 6-0, over Adela Krutiyenko. Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzflen, Germany) suffered Tech's lone loss of the match in her No. 1 contest, 6-2, 6-1, against Michal Amir.
The match opened with the Hokies sweeping the doubles competition. Tech's Brouwer/Larson won 8-6 at No. 1 against Amir/Miller, Hamza/Long picked up a 9-7 win at No. 2 versus Huschke/Lundmark and Beermann/Johnson won the No. 3 match, 8-1, over Jacqueline Krutiyenko/MacKeever
The Hokies return to action next weekend with matches at #28 Clemson (Apr., 5) and at #3 Georgia Tech (Apr. 6)
