Jacques/Re advance to UVa Invitational Finals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va - Sebastien Jacques and Yoann Re picked up an upset victory Saturday to advance to the A doubles final at the UVa Fall Invitational. The tournament features players from 17 schools, including seven nationally-ranked singles players and two doubles teams. The event is being played at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus.

Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada)/Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) upset the tournament's No. 2 seed and 38th-ranked team of Juneau/Vidal (William & Mary), 8-5, to advance to Sunday's A doubles final. The Tech duo will face the top seeds, No. 33 Barrick/Singh (Virginia), Sunday at 9 a.m. In the other A doubles semifinal, Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.)/Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain) lost, 8-3, to Barrick/Singh (Virginia). In B doubles, Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia)/Eduardo Pinto (Jr., San Jose, Costa Rica) dropped their semifinal match, 8-6, versus Milner/Nguyen (Virginia). However, Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.)/Zachary Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) advanced to the B doubles consolation final with a 8-2 win over Cardoso/Heird (Longwood). The Hokies pair will play Robinson/Smith (James Madison) in the 9 a.m. match on Sunday.

In A-1 singles consolation, Re fell 7-6, 6-2, to Mihal Nichifor (Columbia), while the Hokies dropped two A-2 singles semifinals as Delgado de Robles lost, 6-3, 6-3, against Lee Singer (Virginia) and Jacques was eliminated, 6-1, 6-1, by No. 104 and second-seed, Michael Shabaz (Virginia). Somen picked up a 7-6, 6-4, B singles quarterfinal win versus Sven Vloedgraven (Binghamton), but was eliminated in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-2, by Sebastien Vidal (William & Mary). Vidal had earlier defeated Corace, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the B consolation bracket Daciek defeated Renato Melo (Nebraska), 6-1, 6-2, before dropping a 6-1, 7-5, match against Jared Robinson (James Madison).

Zachery Pine took a 2-6, 5-2 ret. match against Phillip Nemac (Elon) in C singles, but then was eliminated, 6-1, 6-4, by Sander Gille (East Tennessee State). On the C consolation side, Jonathan Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) fell, 7-5, 6-1, to Chase Helpinstine (Elon). Pinto defeated Darren Ng (Binghamton), 6-3, 6-2, in the D singles consolation and then advanced to the finals with a 6-0, 1-0 ret. victory over Robin Asker (East Tennessee State). Pinto will face Andy Erickson (George Washington) Sunday at 9 a.m. Preston Lemon (Sr., Roanoke, Va.) defeated Leif Sunderland (Virginia), 6-4, 6-1, in the D singles preliminary consolation.

The tournament concludes Sunday.
