No. 13 Tar Heels defeat Hokies, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - After honoring seniors Bethan James (Flintshire, U.K.), J.J. Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Jessica Long (Elizabethtown, Pa.), the Virginia Tech women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Sunday morning to No. 13 North Carolina in the final regular season match for both teams at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Complex on the Virginia Tech campus. The Tar Heels improved to 16-7, 7-3, while No. 56 Virginia Tech fell to 14-12, 2-9.

The Hokies dropped two of the three doubles matches and won one of the six singles contests in the loss as they will now prepare for the four-day ACC Championships, which is set to begin on Thursday, April 17, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Tech is the No. 10 seed, and the rest of the seeds will be known after the completion of league play later today.

In singles, the lone win occurred in the No. 5 match as Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands) defeated Sophie Grabinski, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6). Elsewhere, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 versus No. 8 Sanaz Marand, while Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt), ranked No. 120, lost her No. 2 contest, 6-4, 6-1, against 29th-ranked Katrina Tsang. Long fell 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8), at No. 3 to 97th-ranked Austin Smith, Larson lost 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 match versus Laura Reichert and Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6 against Meg Fanjoy.

In doubles, the Hokies won No. 3 as Long/Hamza defeated Reichert/Alexandra Jurewitz, 8-3, but Brouwer/Larson dropped the No. 1 match, 8-1, against Grabinski/Marand. UNC took the doubles point when Beermann/Johnson lost 8-1 at No. 2 to 51st-ranked Smith/Tsang.
