BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match Saturday afternoon to No. 9 Duke in a ACC contest played at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Duke improved to 15-3, 8-2, while Virginia Tech fell to 14-11, 2-8.
Tech, ranked No. 56 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, dropped two of the three doubles matches and won one of the six singles contest in the loss.
In singles, the lone win occurred in the No. 6 match as Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) defeated Tory Zawacki, 6-1, 6-4. Elsewhere, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost 7-5, 6-0, at No. 1 versus Tara Iyer while Yasmin Hamza(Fr., Cairo, Egypt), ranked No. 120, lost her No. 2 contest, 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (4), against 15th-ranked Ellah Nze. Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) fell 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 to No. 17 Reka Zsilinszka, J.J. Larson(Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) lost 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 4 match versus Melissa Mang and Jessica Brouwer(Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands) lost 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 against Amanda Granson.
In doubles, the Hokies won at No. 2 as Beermann/Johnson defeated Iyer/Zawacki, 8-2, but Brouwer/Larson dropped the No. 1 match, 8-1, against fifth-ranked Granson/Mang. Duke took the doubles point when Hamza/Long lost 8-4 at No. 3 to Nze/Zsilinszka.
The Hokies conclude the regular season on Sunday, Apr. 13, when they host No. 13 North Carolina at 10 a.m. Tech seniors Bethan James, J.J. Larson and Jessica Long will be honored prior to the match.
