Tech posts pair of top-seven finishes at NCAA Southeast Regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Virginia Tech cross country team competed in the NCAA Southeast Regional meet on Saturday at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

The women's team finished fifth in a 31-team field that featured No. 21 North Carolina State who won the event and Duke took runner-up honors, while No. 26 North Carolina finished third.

Tasmin Fanning led the way for the Hokies in the 6k race who completed the course in a season-best time 20:05.05. She was followed by Natalie Sherbak, who finished 10th in 20:44.55.

Jessica Fanning was the 22nd finisher, and finished in 21:15.80, while Sam Ference finished 52nd with a time of 21:43.80. Kelly Clark was 68th in a time of 22:04.10 and Erin Reddan was 91st at time of 22:20.05. Asia Washington came across the finish line with a 104th-place finish with a time of 22:36.35.

The men's team took seventh place against a 29-team field that featured four nationally-ranked squads, No. 9 Virginia, No. 11 North Carolina State, No. 13 Louisville, and No. 25 William and Mary. NC State took the event title with 69 points.

Devin Cornwall led the men's team with a 28th-place finish at 30:57.05 and was followed by Paul LaPenna, who took 32nd-place at 31:03.60. Billy Berlin finished the course in 31:14.05 for 38th place to complete Tech's presence in the top 50.

James Scheiner finished in 31:42.45 for 57th place. Scheiner was followed by Matt Kroetch in 74th place. Kroetch crossed the finish line in 31:59.95, and was followed by Zach Thomas in 87th (32:13.85). Rider Clauss rounded out Tech's scoring with a 90th-place finish in a time of 32:26.50.
