The Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame Committee would like to hear from you! At the bottom of this page, you can submit a nomination for a former student-athlete, coach, administrator or staff member that you believe has made an impact on Virginia Tech Athletics and should be considered for induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Please submit a PDF addressed to The Committee outlining who you are nominating and include examples of their achievements while at Virginia Tech as well as high-character moments that would signify that this person was deserving of a spot in the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Before submitting, please familiarize yourself with a few parameters for induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. The committee may also take into consideration the impacts that the nominee made beyond their time at Virginia Tech.
Student-Athlete Inductee Criteria
•Student-athletes will not be eligible until 10 years following the completion of their final NCAA competition at Virginia Tech.
•The student-athlete candidate must have completed at least two years at Virginia Tech and finished his/her collegiate career at Virgina Tech, unless they earned an undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech prior to transferring to another university. The candidate must have left the school, as a graduate or if not, in good standing and with the good graces of university officials.
• The candidate must have had nationally recognized ability and must have at least earned all-conference honors at Virginia Tech, with exceptions for earlier eras when Virginia Tech was either not in a conference or all-conference teams were not as prevalent. Examples of achievements, while not automatically qualifying a candidate, would be such things as being a.) member of an Olympic medal-winning team, b.) national record-holder, c.) first-, second- or third-team All-America, d.) conference Player of the Year, e.) first-, second- or third-team all-conference, f.) individual conference champion, g.) conference record-holder, h.) Virginia Tech school record-holder, i.) first-, second- or third-team academic in their conference or an Academic All-American.

Sport: Women’s Soccer
Years at VT: 2013-2016
Notable: Program’s all-time leader in goals and points
A stalwart center forward, Tiernan’s name is etched all throughout the Virginia Tech women’s soccer record books from her time in maroon and orange.
In each of her first three seasons on campus the Hokies reached the NCAA tournament, including a College Cup run in 2013 and third round appearance in 2014. She led the Hokies in both goals and points all four years and still holds career marks in several statistical categories. Tiernan ranks first in points (112), goals (49), game-winning goals (23), multi-goal games (9), fifth in games started (83), and ninth in assists (14).
She owns a long list of accolades that includes being named to the ACC’s All-Freshman Team in 2013 and being listed on the conference’s First Team from 2014 to 2016. Tiernan was also recognized as an all-state player four times, an all-region player three times and was an NSCAA All-American Third Team member in 2015. She was also featured as espnW’s Player of the Week during her junior season.
Coach Inductee Criteria
•Must have served at Virginia Tech for 10 years, unless they have already retired from Virginia Tech. Current full- or part-time employees of the Virginia Tech athletics department are not eligible for selection to the Hall of Fame.
•A candidate who has successfully distinguished himself/herself by demonstrating exceptional leadership, character, and athletics expertise, and made outstanding contributions to intercollegiate athletics at Virginia Tech, such as conference champions, NCAA champions, and NCAA appearances.

Sport: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Wrestling, Men’s Golf, Facilities
Years at VT: 1974-2025
Notable: All-time winningest coach in wrestling and men’s soccer program history
Across a five-decade career of service to Virginia Tech Athletics, Cheynet left an enduring legacy on the Athletics Department in various roles throughout his tenure. Cheynet was the head coach of four different programs on campus; wrestling, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s golf, including leading three at the same time from 1980 to 1983.
As the men’s soccer head coach from 1974 to 2001, he took over a program in its third year of existence. In 1997 he was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year when he led the Hokies to a 14-5-1 record as the Hokies achieved a national ranking for the first time.
Cheynet also guided the wrestling program from 1974-1996 where he earned Coach of the Year accolades in 1993 after steering the Hokies to the CAA tournament title.
From 1980 to 1983, he led the men’s golf team, and he also assumed the role of women’s soccer coach for the 2002 season.
After his coaching career concluded, Cheynet worked in the facilities department from 2003 to 2025 where he could be seen on Olympic sport game days assisting in field preparation as well as supporting visiting team operations and escorting officials.
Administration/Staff/Other Inductee Criteria
•Individuals who have rendered extraordinary service, leadership and/or support contributing directly to the success of student-athletes within the Virginia Tech Athletics Department and who have worked as a full-time employee at Virginia Tech for a minimum of 10 years may be nominated and inducted.
