Chris Mahon

Joined VT Athletics Staff: 2026

Prior to Virginia Tech: Mahon spent five seasons at Penn State (2021-25), beginning his career as an operations assistant, before being promoted to assistant recruiting director for personnel and recruitment, serving in the role from 2022-25.

Mahon helped lead the identification, evaluation and connection with top student-athletes across the country. He was involved with every step of the recruiting process.

Mahon also worked directly with the Head Football Coach to create analytical recruiting reports and supported the assistant coaches by creating prospect watch lists and maintaining recruiting boards. He directly oversaw all assistant coach recruiting travel, creating the evaluation and contact period travel schedule and overseeing day-to-day logistics. 

Mahon helped build the Hokies 2026 recruiting class, which went from the 124th rated class (247 Sports) in the country at the time of James Franklin’s hire on November 17th to a consensus top-30 class by the end of the signing period, a jump of nearly 100 spots. It is the Hokies’ highest rated class since 2019.

Personal: A native of State College, Pennsylvania, Mahon is engaged to Heidi Erb.
