Executive Associate AD/Sport Administration

Job responsibilities: Chris Helms was promoted to Executive Associate AD/Sport Administration in fall 2023. He oversees the Sports Medicine/Athletic Training unit and serves as the liaison for the University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Housing Services. Helms is the primary sport administrator for Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field, Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Softball, Wrestling, and Women's Golf programs.

Joined VT Athletics Staff (full time): 1999

At Virginia Tech: Before moving into his current role within the department in 2008, Helms served as the director of student-athlete academic support services (SAASS) at Tech. In addition to his duties directing SAASS, he served as a liaison between the academic and athletic communities and is an ad hoc member of the University Athletic Committee.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Helms came to Tech from Michigan State University, where he served as the assistant director of the student-athlete support services office. Prior to that, he served as the coordinator of academic affairs for the Florida State University football program. He also worked in an academic advising capacity for student-athletes at Central Connecticut State University.

Education: Wake Forest, 1990 (B.A. Psychology), Springfield (Mass.) College, 1993 (M. Ed. Athletic Counseling)

Of Note: Helms has provided service to the NCAA, Conference and University on numerous committees including, NCAA Progress Toward Degree Waiver Committee, NCAA Softball Committee, ACC Wrestling Committee, ACC Softball Committee, ACC Track and Field & Cross Country Committee, VT Faculty Senate, VT Diversity and Inclusion Cross Divisional Work Group, Summit on Student Athletics Success Planning Committee, Vice President, Blacksburg Sports Club

Personal: A native of Frederick, Md., Helms and his wife, Renee, have a son, Walker, and a daughter, Meigs. When not in the office, Helms can be found on the links. He can hit a butter cut on demand but prefers his natural right-to-left piercing ball flight.
