Prior to Virginia Tech: Futrell spent 12 seasons at Penn State as associate director of athletic performance for football (2014-25). He previously was the director of strength and conditioning at Tennessee State University (2010-13) following two seasons as the assistant director of strength and conditioning (2008-09).
He started his career in strength and conditioning as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University (2006-07).
In 2022, Futrell earned the title of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (MSCC). He is Certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (C.S.C.S), the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCC) and U.S.A. Weightlifting Level 1 Sports and Performance.

Personal: Futrell is a native of Goodlettsville, Tennessee and a former defensive back at Western Kentucky.
