Responsibilities: Wurthman oversees the Hokie Club, Ticketing (Sales, Service, and Operations), Brand Advancement (Marketing and External Operations, Creative Design/Video/Communications), Broadcast and Productions, the In-Venue Experience, the ACC Network, Facilities Technology and serves as the department’s liaison with LEARFIELD and other key campus partners. He is responsible for all revenue generation, fan development and brand management programs within Athletics.
Joined VT Athletics Staff: Hired in 2017 as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations.
At Virginia Tech: Wurthman is proud of the External Affairs and Advancement squad and the myriad of successes their work has brought to life, on a local, regional and national scale. The team has achieved the ambitious “Drive for 25” campaign in back-to-back drive years, has set fundraising and total revenue records at Virginia Tech, has installed numerous fan experience touchpoints with various partners and has worked to create memorable experiences that only Virginia Tech can offer.
The External Affairs and Advancement team is relatively unique in the collegiate athletics space as it includes all fan facing and revenue driving units within Athletics. This approach has helped to break down internal silos and drive support at consistently high levels.
Prior To Virginia Tech: Wurthman came to Virginia Tech from the University of Illinois where he spent three years (2014 - 2017) as the Associate Athletics Director/Marketing and Fan Engagement. In that role, he oversaw marketing, ticket sales, branding, customer service, game day experience, and event production.
Before that, Wurthman spent seven years (2007 - 2014) at the University of Cincinnati in various Marketing and Ticket Sales roles. Wurthman was promoted to Associate AD, Marketing, Sales and Communications at Cincinnati in May 2012 by current Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock during his tenure as UC’s AD from 2011-13. Wurthman began his career with the Bearcats as manager of ticket sales and events in 2007 before his role expanded to include marketing, sales and fan development. During his tenure at UC, the school’s football gameday presentation was consistently recognized by national media outlets as one of the best environments in the nation.
Of Note: A NACMA Board Member and current NACMA President (2023-24), Wurthman began serving a four-year term with that organization in June 2016. Prior to beginning his career in collegiate athletics, he worked in the front office of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. The valedictorian of McMaster University’s Class of 2007, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business in May 2007 and later received a Master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati in 2010.
Personal: Wurthman is joined in Blacksburg by his wife, Shannon, and children, Owen and Nora. He is a native of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
