Shelby Miller

Senior Director, Student-Athlete Leadership Development

Responsibilities: Miller serves as the director of student-athlete developmen and is responsible for assisting with leadership development programming for student-athletes as part of the Virginia Tech Athletics Leadership Institute. Miller also coordinates and travels with the leadership study abroad course that falls under the Leadership Institute, “Sport, Policy, and Society”, which currently travels to Rwanda, Africa. She serves as the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and supports SAAC representatives that represent VT at the ACC and NCAA levels. Miller is also responsible for planning the end of the year awards show, The Gobblers, as well as assisting in the overall planning of department-wide events.

Joined VT Athletics Staff: 2016

Prior to Virginia Tech: Miller worked as a graduate assistant for Life Skills in the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services office at Northern Illinois. She served as the point coordinator for the “Huskie Experience,” NIU’s student-athlete development program and various student services projects.

She also spent time as a graduate assistant for Compliance and Student Services for the NIU athletics department.

Education: Northern Illinois, 2014 (B.S. in corporate/organization communication); Northern Illinois, 2015 (Master’s in sport management).

Of Note: Miller was a three-year starter on the Huskies softball team, and following her senior season, she earned the Nan Harvey Sportswoman of the Year Award as handed out by the Mid-American Conference. She started 174 games in her career, including every game her final two seasons.

Personal: Miller is a native of Ottawa, Kansas.
