A Talk With...
Having one, possibly two meets left, what are your goals for the rest of the season?
"Mainly just to have fun. Bottom line. I've had trouble with my shoulders, so not only to get through it, but to have fun. And if I can improve, I would definitely hope for that. And then as a leader and a captain to get everybody else motivated and excited.

What's the best part about being on the swimming and diving team?
"The team itself. But for me, it's also the satisfaction that you can accomplish something like being a Division I athlete and also doing well in school."

What's the worst part then?
"Knowing that it's going to be over. You spend four years with all of these people, and you know that it's going to be over. I'm going to miss them. I'm going to miss the team atmosphere, the excitement of competing. That's the downside."

What brought you for Virginia Tech?
"My high school coach actually swam here, before Ned was here. And she suggested 'why don't you look at Virginia Tech?' And my first reaction was 'it's too cold there, I don't do snow.' I decided at the last minute to take a trip here, I was all by myself on my recruiting trip. (Head Coach) Ned (Skinner) was very supportive of my swimming and everything, and in the end it just seemed like this was the right place for me."

What do you want to do with your major (Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise)?
"I am currently applying to graduate school at Georgia State for physical therapy, and then I also applied to St. Augustine. I'm hoping to do a dual degree, getting my doctorate in physical therapy and my master's in occupational therapy."

Last movie you saw?
"March of the Penguins. (laughs). It was very interesting, I learned a lot about penguins."

Did you pick up any swimming techniques from them?
"I guess it would help if I was more rubbery, and could repel water like that."

What is a bigger waste of time, facebook or myspace?
"I am anti-both. I will not do either one, I haven't signed up for either. Everyone keeps saying that they're going to make up a name for me and sign me up."

That's when you're in trouble, when your friends are signing up for you.
"That's what I've heard, so I will have people check my name, just to make sure I don't have some weird picture on there."

When you look back on your swimming career here, what is the one thing that's going to stand out?
"That I made it. With the injuries that I've had, I've been able to push through. As much as they hurt, I've always had the girls there for me and supporting me, even though I maybe can't go to a practice or do the same sets as them. And like I said, just making it. I came from a class of six, and now there's just two of us left. I made it swimming four years, and I made it through college in four years."

2003-04: Finished seventh at the BIG EAST Championships in the 100 freestyle ... Was on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team against East Carolina.

2002-03: Finished 15th in the 50 freestyle at the Nike Cup with a time of 23.77 ... Came in 14th in the same event at the BIG EAST Championships ... Finished second in the 50 freestyle against East Carolina.

HIGH SCHOOL: Was the recipient of four varsity letters while swimming at St. Pius X Catholic High School for Coaches Scott Carter and Margaret Guilbert ... Placed in the top six at the state finals in the 50 freestyle and was named MVP all four years ... Selected team captain as a senior ... A member of the 1998 junior national championship Dynamo Swim Club ... Also lettered in track & field as a pole vaulter and sprinter.

PERSONAL: Juliana Marie Daniell was born November 12, 1983 in Atlanta, Georgia... Daughter of Bob and Carolyn Daniell ... Majoring in human nutrition, foods and exercise with a minor in chemistry and biology.
