Reyna Gilbert-Lowry

Responsibilities: As senior associate athletics director of student-athlete development and senior woman administrator, Gilbert-Lowry is responsible for supervision and oversight of the daily operations of the Lombardi Student-Athlete Development Center. Through the Center, workshops and resources are provided to assist student-athletes with preparation for success both in college and after graduation in the core areas of career development, leadership development, and personal development. Gilbert-Lowry also serves on the Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Education Committee and Diversity and Inclusion Committee and is the departmental liaison to Student Conduct. In addition, she also serves as sport supervisor for the women’s soccer program.

Joined VT Athletics Staff: 2008

At Virginia Tech: Gilbert-Lowry began her career at Virginia Tech as the Assistant Athletics Director for Student Life where her duties included developing programs geared to enhance student-athletes’ personal growth, leadership and character development, professional development and community outreach endeavors. She has also been responsible for working with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, nominating student-athletes for conference and national academic awards, and planning the annual Athletics Director Honors Breakfast and Gobblers Awards.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Before joining the Hokies, Gilbert-Lowry served as the compliance coordinator and CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In 2005, she was also the coordinator of athletic academic services. Prior to NSU, Gilbert-Lowry served as an academic advisor at the University of Central Florida.

Education: Northern Illinois University, 2001 (psychology), Ball State University, 2004 (master’s in sport and exercise psychology and a minor in counseling).

Of Note: Gilbert-Lowry was a four-year letter winner at Northern Illinois, where she was a member of the women’s gymnastics team. She was named the MVP her senior season. She currently represents Virginia Tech as a member of the ACC Women’s Soccer and Student-Athlete Welfare committees.

Personal: A native of Orlando, Fla., Gilbert-Lowry currently lives in Christiansburg with her husband, Spencer, and their daughters, Brooklyn and Harlow.

Responsibilities: As assistant athletic director of student-athlete development, Wimmer oversees the personal development programming for all Hokie student-athletes. This includes the planning and implementation of New Student-Athlete Orientation, individual and team community partnerships, sexual misconduct and relationship violence prevention education, and “Personal Branding and Job Success” workshops covering a variety of “life skills” topics. She also oversees the nomination of student-athletes for conference and national awards. In addition, Wimmer serves as the co-advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also assists other members of the student-athlete development staff in planning the Athletic Director’s Honors Celebration and the Career Jumpstart.

Joined VT Athletics Staff: 2014

At Virginia Tech: Wimmer began her career at Tech as the coordinator for student-athlete development. In that role, she coordinated programming to enhance student-athletes’ personal development, career awareness and a commitment to community service, while meeting the university motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve). She also served as co-advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and assisted in planning the All-Sports Banquet, Athletics Director’s Honors Breakfast, Reading Day luncheons and New Student-Athlete Orientation. In January of 2016, she was named director of student-athlete development.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Before being hired as coordinator of student-athlete development, Wimmer served as an intern in the office, formerly known as the Office of Student Life, from September of 2013 to May of 2014. She also held internships with Coastal Plain League Baseball Teams in Hampton, Virginia, and Morehead City, North Carolina during the summers from 2012 to 2014. While at Virginia Tech, she was involved in the Sports Business Club and on an executive committee for Relay For Life 2014.

Education: Virginia Tech, 2014 (B.S. in apparel, housing and resource management); Old Dominion University, 2016 (Master’s of Sports Management)

Personal: Wimmer grew up in Hampton, Virginia, and attended Kecoughtan High School. She currently lives in Blacksburg, Virginia, and enjoys watching baseball, spending time with her dog, Barkley, and attending Hokie football games with her family.

Responsibilities: As Director of Student-Athlete Leadership Development, Spera oversees the Leadership Institute, including the Leadership Culture and Next Level Leadership programs. She also serves as the co-advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), as well as coordinates community outreach efforts and Hokie Women RISE.

Joined VT Athletics Staff: 2021

Prior to Virginia Tech: Before joining the Hokies, Spera served as Assistant Director for Marketing & Recruiting at the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA. Prior to her time at UVA, she worked in Student-Athlete Engagement and coached the dance team at Syracuse University.

Education: Syracuse University, 2017 (B.S. in Broadcast & Digital Journalism, Minor: Sport Management); Syracuse University, 2020 (M.S. in Higher Education)

Of Note: Spera was a four-year member and two-year captain of the Syracuse University Dance Team and served as Vice President of Syracuse SAAC.

Personal: A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Spera currently lives in Blacksburg with her dog, Willa.
