DALLAS – The Virginia Tech football team suffered a 51-28 loss Friday to SMU Friday evening at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The result drops the Hokies to 6-3 (4-3), while the Mustangs’ record stands at 7-2 (5-2).

The hosts got out to a fast start, scoring the game’s first 10 points in the first quarter before the Hokies settled in and moved the football down the field. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer led the Hokies on an 11-play drive that culminated in his sixth rushing score of the season.

Jeffrey Overton, Jr. also found the end zone, thanks to a 22-yard run with 3:47 to play in the first half, keeping the Hokies within striking distance.

The Mustangs, who led 23-14 at the half, would score three consecutive touchdowns in the second half to establish a 30-point lead that Tech would chip away at, before ultimately falling 51-28.

Grunkemeyer finished the game with 291 passing yards and a touchdown to Que’Sean Brown and Overton Jr. recorded his third 100-yard rushing game in the contest.

Late in the game, Brennan Johnson intercepted a pass, the first of his career.
