Tech tops Longwood, 3-1, at Thompson Field

The Hokies scored all three of their goals on headers

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Three different Hokies found the back of the net as RV Virginia Tech men's soccer earned a 3-1 victory over Longwood on Tuesday night at Thompson Field.

Virginia Tech (7-3-1) controlled the match from the opening whistle, finishing with a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. The Hokies also put nine shots on target, forcing Longwood goalkeeper Nicolas Pucci to make six saves.

Dagur Traustason opened the scoring in the 10th minute, putting the Hokies ahead 1-0 at the 9:35 mark. Alvaro Ruiz-Mateos and Tito Peralta were credited with assists on the goal. Tech carried the one-goal advantage into halftime after limiting the Lancers to four first-half shots.

Longwood (6-5-0) pulled level early in the second half when Brando Bedolla converted a penalty kick in the 49th minute.

The Hokies responded less than 10 minutes later. Amir Ariely restored Virginia Tech's lead in the 59th minute, finishing a chance set up by Alex Perez to make it 2-1.

Virginia Tech continued to pressure the Lancers and added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Chase Vazquez, who entered as a substitute, scored off an assist from Ariely to push the Hokies' advantage to 3-1.
