Virginia Tech drops ACC road match at No. 10 Pitt

The Hokies received a red card after maintaining a strong back line for 73 minutes

PITTSBURGH – Virginia Tech (7-4-1, 3-2-1 ACC) dropped a 3-0 match to No. 10 Pitt on Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

After a scoreless opening half, the Panthers (7-2-2, 3-1-1 ACC) broke through in the 73rd minute when Albert Thorsen converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. No. 10 Pitt was awarded the penalty after challenging a missed foul on a goal-scoring opportunity. The challenge also resulted in a straight red card for the Hokies, leaving Tech with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

No. 10 Pitt doubled its lead in the 79th minute when Mamadou Tall found the back of the net off an assist from Anders Bordoy. The Panthers added a third goal in the 87th minute when Santiago Ferreira scored with assists from Bruno Bertran and Tall to close out the scoring.

The Hokies finished with four shots, including one on target, while the Panthers recorded 10 shots and four on target. Virginia Tech also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
