DALLAS – The Hokies (6-3-4) took a point from the SMU Mustangs (5-4-4) in Dallas with a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.
Anna Weir scored her seventh goal of the season, marking a new career high.
How It Happened
The Hokies started on the front foot, with Anna Weir finding the back of the net in the 11th minute. Weir picked off an SMU defender, putting her in behind the defense for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. She took a touch beyond the goalkeeper and placed the ball into the open net.
The Mustangs found the equalizer 20 minutes later as a misplayed ball from Syri Davis in the midfield allowed SMU to jump on the counterattack. The Mustangs took a shot from 25 yards out where Julianna Trujillo made the initial save but allowed a rebound that landed at the feet of an SMU forward who finished into the top netting.
The second half was filled with chances for both teams, but neither was able to find a breakthrough. The closest chance for SMU came in the 75th minute off a corner kick that Lilli Lubic cleared off the line for the Hokies with a backheel scorpion kick.
With 25 seconds remaining, SMU found themselves on a breakaway to goal, but Trujillo made a diving save on a low, driven shot across the six-yard box to keep the score at 1-1.
