BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Hokies fell to No. 3 SMU, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field.

Virginia Tech (5-3-1, 2-1-1 ACC) battled the undefeated Mustangs (8-0-1, 3-0-0 ACC) throughout the match, but SMU’s two first-half goals gave it a lead that Tech could not overcome.

SMU opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Landon Hickam found the back of the net off an assist from Stephan Soghomonian. The Mustangs doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when Milton Lopez converted a chance set up by Ryan Clanton-Pimentel and Enzo Panozzo.

The Hokies generated more offensive pressure in the second half, matching SMU with five shots and earning five corner kicks. Virginia Tech recorded eight shots overall, including three on target.

The Mustangs added a third goal in the 83rd minute when Soghomonian converted a penalty kick to make it 3-0.
