Hokies fall to ETSU, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech (2-2-1) men's soccer dropped a midweek match to ETSU (2-3-0), 3-1, at Thompson Field Wednesday evening.

The Buccaneers opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Gavin Dick found the back of the net off an assist from Elliot Edwards, sending ETSU into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Virginia Tech continued to pressure the ETSU defense in the second half and eventually found the equalizer in the 74th minute. Alvaro Ruiz-Mateos scored his first career goal off an assist from Mathias Yohannes, leveling the match at 1-1.

The Buccaneers regained the lead in the 87th minute when Edwards scored his second goal of the season, with Jaime Carrillo providing the assist. ETSU added an insurance goal in the 90th minute as Joe Gonzalez scored unassisted to secure the 3-1 victory.

Virginia Tech resumes ACC play on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. as RV Wake Forest heads into Blacksburg. The match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
