Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech running back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. has been named to the watch list for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, recognizing his leadership on the field, within the Virginia Tech football program and in the community.
The award, presented annually by the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Foundation, honors a college football player who best demonstrates a commitment to leadership, integrity, sportsmanship and service to others.
Hawkins has become one of the veteran leaders of the Hokies' program, earning the respect of his teammates through the way he approaches his work each day. He has also made an impact away from the field, regularly giving his time to community service and looking for opportunities to help others.
Since arriving at Virginia Tech, Hawkins has made a positive impact throughout the New River Valley and surrounding region. Among his efforts, he helped spearhead a canned food drive for Micah's Backpack that collected nearly 2,400 cans of food to help address food insecurity in the New River Valley.
The Jason Witten Man of the Year Award recognizes players who demonstrate excellence in three areas: community service, academic achievement and athletic performance. The award's namesake, Witten, established the foundation to recognize college football players who exemplify the qualities of a man of character and leadership.
