Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. - After months of excitement and a program shift that has given Blacksburg national relevance, Virginia Tech Football will finally take the field in competition as they host VMI on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Head coach James Franklin and his squad will make their long-awaited debut in front of what is already a sold-out crowd in Lane Stadium.
Saturday’s contest serves as the first showing for a new era of Virginia Tech Football. To be prepared for what promises to be a history-defining matchup, here are Five Things to Know in order to make the most of your visit to Blacksburg this weekend.
James Franklin’s Debut – Franklin will take to Worsham Field for the first time as head coach of the Hokies on Saturday night. A proven winner and program trailblazer, the Pennsylvania native’s first appearance on the sidelines has been appointment viewing since his hiring in November 2025.
Joining Franklin in his debut has a surrounding cast of elite level coaches – many of which have decades of experience at their respective positions – and a squad that earned a consensus top-30 transfer portal ranking (ESPN, 247Sports, On3) in the offseason. Fans should keep an eye on how both sides of the ball debut on Saturday against a Keydets team that fell in their season opener, 38-10.
A Rivalry Renewed – The Hokies open their 2026 campaign with a matchup against VMI, an opponent Tech has not faced since 1984. The two teams, which share a rich history rooted in a reverence of military tradition, will play their 80th head-to-head contest under the bright lights of Lane Stadium this weekend.
“The Original Military Classic of the South” - which often was played on Thanksgiving Day between the two squads from 1913 to 1971 – was a fixture of the college football scene in the New River Valley and in Roanoke, and the game would draw crowds far beyond both universities. Tech holds a 49-25-5 advantage all-time in the series and will look to claim the Governor’s Sword once again as proof of victory in the rivalry.
Be sure to find your seat before kickoff as U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. William H. Seely III, the 37th commandant of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, will join VMI superintendent and retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. David Furness at midfield to present the rivalry trophy.
Gameday Has Never Looked Better – Backed by an extensive commitment to program revitalization and an Invest to Win mindset, Virginia Tech Football has revamped to align with the expectations of a national contender. Because of this, elements of the gameday experience have changed, meaning Hokie fans should be aware of the most updated recommendations.
- Upgrades to the videoboard, audio systems and LED light fixtures have turned Lane Stadium into a more interactive, exciting and digitally advanced place to watch the Hokies take on the competition.
- The first wave of cellular connectivity enhancements will be available this fall as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the mobile experience on gameday.

Before Kickoff and Orange Effect – The 2026 football season will start off with an Orange Effect against VMI, letting Hokie fans know to wear their best and brightest burnt orange merchandise on gameday. Before kickoff, however, fans should get to Lane Stadium to enjoy all the offerings that are sure to make the gameday experience that much more memorable.
Hokie Village, which returns for yet another exciting regular season, will be open from 4 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on the turf field along Beamer Way. The family-friendly hub includes live music, a variety of can’t-miss food trucks, and autographs from the Virginia Tech Softball and Volleyball squads. Additionally, a flyover – conducted by alumni from both Virginia Tech and VMI – can be seen prior to kickoff, featuring two HH-60 helicopters and one HC-130 cargo plane flown by the U.S. Air Force 347th RQG out of Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.
Back-to-Back Blacksburg – Saturday's contest is the first of two consecutive games in Blacksburg to open the 2026 season, as Tech football hosts Old Dominion on Sept. 12 in the Salute to Service matchup.
