Hokies remain unbeaten in 2-2 draw with Maryland

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech closed out its August home slate with a 2-2 tie with Maryland on Sunday night. 

Peyton May scored her first career goal while Riley Karpinski netted her second of the season. 

How It Happened
The Hokies started on the front foot with nine shots throughout the first half. The breakthrough came in the 29th minute off a corner kick from Hannah Pachan. Peyton May met the ball in the air, sending it into the back of the net for her first career goal. 

Less than ten minutes later, substitutes Lily Pantaleo and Riley Karpinski combined for the Hokies’ second goal. The ball fell to Pantaleo in Tech’s defensive half, where she proceeded to drive up the field to the Terrapins’ 18-yard box before laying it off to Karpinski, who took a touch before sending it past the goalkeeper for a 2-0 Hokies lead to end the first half. 

In the 65th minute, Maryland picked up the ball in their defensive half and drove forward, beating the Hokies on a give-and-go before a deflected shot in the box fell directly to an oncoming Terrapins attacker, who finished into the back of the net. 

Maryland found the equalizer just six minutes after their first. Strong passing through the midfield got the ball up to the top of the 18-yard box, where the Terrapins struck the ball past the outstretched hand of Julianna Trujillo. 

The Hokies kept the pressure high with chances all the way until the final seconds of the match. Pachan was fouled at the top of the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick for the Hokies with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Eliana Salama stepped up to take it, placing the ball to the upper 90, but was denied by a fingertip save from the Maryland goalkeeper.
