Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Athletics announced the elevation of Evan Hughes to the role of director of broadcasting for Virginia Tech Sports Network Wednesday afternoon. Hughes, who has worked as the assistant director of broadcast services previously will assume duties of hosting Hokie football’s pregame and postgame show as well as contributing to game broadcasts from the sidelines. Additionally, he will be the play-by-play broadcaster for the men’s basketball program and contribute to other storytelling platforms including podcasts, social media content and hosting Tech Talk Live.
Hughes will oversee the relationships between the 40+ radio affiliates that make up the Virginia Tech Sports Network and will also handle the day-to-day operation of the network and radio broadcasts of all Virginia Tech sports.
Hokie fans know Hughes from his iconic on-air calls ranging from the 2023 women’s basketball Final Four run to the baseball program’s 2022 season where they hosted Regionals and Super Regionals at English Field. A regular emcee at awards ceremonies and events around Blacksburg, Hughes has contributed so much to Virginia Tech in his first five years of professional work, and he is relishing the opportunity to take on new challenges in this expanded role.
“The phrase gets thrown around a lot, but this is truly a dream come true for me,” Hughes said of his new appointment. “I grew up coming to Virginia Tech games as a kid and am a proud graduate. My dad played soccer here. My sister graduated here. I am a Hokie through and through. It is an honor to continue to help bring the Hokies’ storylines to life on the radio and now to do so alongside two people I grew up listening to in Bill Roth and Mike Burnop, I could not be more excited to continue providing Hokie fans incredible coverage on The Virginia Tech Sports Network."
Some of Hughes’ prior responsibilities included being the voice of Virginia Tech women’s basketball and baseball programs. He also hosted the Hokie Sports Insider Podcast, a weekly show that provides updates on all sports at Virginia Tech with exclusive interviews from coaches and student-athletes which will continue in a revamped format this fall.
Hughes also does play-by-play duties for ACC Network Extra at Virginia Tech, broadcasting soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, softball and lacrosse competitions.
The Richmond native joined the broadcast team following his graduation from Virginia Tech’s School of Communication in 2021 with a degree in multimedia journalism and a concentration in sports media and analytics. As a senior, he was named the 2021 recipient of the Jim Nantz Award, presented annually to the nation's top college student sportscaster as voted on by working professionals under the umbrella of Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA).
Hughes continues to mentor young broadcasters who are enrolled in the School of Communication’s SMA program, including two young men who have received All-American honors in the past two years.
