Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – Hunter Cattoor will make his return to Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum in 2026, this time as an assistant coach for the Hokies, Mike Young announced Thursday. An athlete who was originally committed to Coach Young at Wofford, Cattoor followed his head coach to Blacksburg in 2019 where he would go on to play for five seasons and set the program record for games played with 152 while raising an ACC Championship banner and appearing in two NCAA tournaments.
“I could not be more excited to welcome Hunter back home to Blacksburg as a member of our coaching staff,” Young said Thursday. “Hunter represented Virginia Tech men’s basketball the right way from the moment he stepped on campus; he’s tough, competitive, unselfish, and he understands our culture, our standards, and what it means to wear ‘Hokies’ across your chest. I am very much looking forward to the impact he’ll have on our program.”
Cattoor is most known for his MVP performance at the 2022 ACC tournament where he guided the Hokies to the program’s first ACC crown by scoring a career-high 31 points in the title game against Duke. The talented shooting guard owns several program records in addition to games played, including 3-pointers made (332), ACC games played (88), and he tied the single game record for 3’s with a staggering nine against Florida State in 2022. The Orlando native became the 50th member of the program’s 1,000-point club during his senior season.
With the Hokies, Cattoor was an All-ACC Academic Team member four times and was also recognized on the 2022 and 2023 NABC Honors Court, 2023 CSC Academic All-District and was the 2021 Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout MVP.
“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to be back in Blacksburg and work with Coach Young and the rest of the staff,” Cattoor commented. “I look forward to meeting the student-athletes and bringing a championship mindset into the locker room.”
Cattoor most recently played with the Long Island Nets of the G League where he averaged 8.4 points in 27 regular season games played. He shot 43% from beyond the arc and contributed 1.8 boards per game.
He also spent a season in the LNB (French first division) with BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque.
