Two 6-0, 6-1 singles victories propel Hokies to sweep UT Chattanooga

ROME, Ga. – The Hokies advance to the final round of the UTR Sports NIT Championship with a 4-0 victory over UT Chattanooga Thursday evening. 

Tech got on the board early by clinching the doubles point. Ilyas Fahim and Patrik Jurina jumped to a 6-1 win to notch the first of two doubles victories. After dropping Court No. 3, the point relied on Blake Hilsen and Eyal Shumilov on Court No. 1. The sophomore duo completed a 6-4 win to give the Hokies a 1-0 advantage. 

The Hokies also came out swinging in singles. Hilsen and Thomás Brandão both shutout their opponents in the first set with 6-0 wins. Brandão won 11-straight games, only dropping the second-to-last game, to outlast his opponent 6-0, 6-1. 

Shumilov gave the Hokies their third point of the match, winning 6-4, 6-2 on Court No. 3. 

Hilsen closed out the evening for the Hokies, clinching the match with the Hokies’ second 6-0, 6-1 win to send the squad to the final round.
