BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech Athletics continued to display impressive results in the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report, which was released Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA.
Five teams, men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, women's lacrosse and women's tennis delivered a perfect multiyear rate of 1,000. Eighteen Hokie programs posted at least a 970. A total of 12 teams had a perfect APR for the 2024-25 academic year, the Hokies' second successive year with a dozen perfect squads.
"These scores tell a powerful story about our student-athletes; their focus, their resilience, and their commitment to academic success while competing at the highest level," Associate Vice Provost for Academic Success Initiatives Sarah Armstrong stated. "Behind every number is a student-athlete putting in the work, supported by dedicated coaches, advisors, and faculty who believe in their success."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete during the school year. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and programs also can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on annual scores from the 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years.
Despite the transfer portal era, which directly impacts retention numbers and overall APR scores, the Hokies maintain impressive academic metrics. All 20 Tech sports programs included in the report exceeded an APR multiyear score of 950. A Hokie-record five teams posted a perfect multiyear score of 1,000 and eight of 20 had a score of at least 990. Women's golf achieved a perfect score for the ninth straight year.
Women's soccer recorded its 15th straight year of at least a 990, while women's tennis and men's tennis delivered their 15th and ninth straight years, respectively. Men's basketball tallied a 958, while football posted a 980. The football program has been above the 950 threshold since 2009-10.
