LOS ANGELES – Longing for a game-changing rally that never came on Friday night, the second-seeded Virginia Tech baseball team was quieted by third-seeded Cal Poly, 6-2, during the teams’ opening game at the 2026 NCAA Los Angeles Regional, as hosted by UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
In defeat, Virginia Tech (30-25) was bumped to the region’s elimination bracket where the Hokies will compete in Game 3 against top-seeded [No. 1] UCLA on Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET). Saturday’s Game 3 winner will advance to Game 5 on Sunday, May 31, at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET) while the losing side will be eliminated from championship contention.
Junior infielder Pete Daniel went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead Virginia Tech, which recorded six hits – its second lowest total during the team’s recent 21-game hot stretch. Hudson Lutterman and Ethan Ball both doubled for the Hokies, who combined to bat 2-for-14 with runners on base, stranding eight runners overall.
