BERKELEY, Calif. – Hammering two home runs during the third inning on Saturday, the Virginia Tech baseball team staked a fast, 4-0 lead at Cal and never looked back on its way to the 6-2, series-clinching victory at Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Sam Gates and Henry Cooke accounted for the Hokies’ two homers that provided more than enough scoring for them to outlast the Golden Bears. Gates led off the third inning by driving a solo shot against the wind that was blowing in from right field while Cooke completed a two-out rally with his three-run blast that carried out to left field.
Gates and Cooke’s fourth home runs of the season layered over Logan Eisenreich’s 10-up, 10-down start to the afternoon as Virginia Tech (25-20, 13-13 ACC) won its fourth consecutive ballgame and its ninth spanning its last 11 games. Eisenreich tied his career high with eight strikeouts, lasting five innings (66 pitches) while holding Cal (23-23, 7-16 ACC) to a run on two hits.
