SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Behind home runs from Rachel Castine and Jordan Lynch, No. 13/17 Virginia Tech (43-9, 17-6 ACC) took down Syracuse (18-25, 4-17 ACC), 13-2, in the second game of the series.
Offensively, the Hokies broke the single-season records for hits (519) and RBIs (400) in the 13-2 win. Emma Mazzarone allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings for her 14th win of the season.
How It Happened
Syracuse struck in the bottom of the first after the Orange capitalized on a Hokie fielding error, bringing two runs across home plate to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Hokies plated five in the top of the third to take the lead. Annika Rohs got the hitting started with a leadoff double to the gap in left center. After Addison Foster got hit by a pitch and Jordan Lynch drew a walk to load the bases, Nora Abromavage hit a single to left field to bring home Rohs.
With the bases loaded once again, Kylie Aldridge ripped a single through the left side to bring home two more runs and take a 3-2 lead. A sacrifice fly by Rachel Castine made it 4-2, and the Hokies capitalized on an Orange error to bring another run home and cap off the five-run inning.
Tech exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth – breaking the program single-season hits and RBIs record in the process. With one out, Lynch hit her team-leading 17th home run to make it a 6-2 game.
Abromavage scored from third on a throwing error by the Orange to make it 7-2. With two outs and a runner on second, Zoe Yaeger ripped an RBI single to break the team single-season program record of 400 RBIs to make it 8-2.
Castine followed up Yaeger with a two-run bomb to dead center – breaking the Tech team program record with 519 hits on the season – to extend the lead to 10-2. Mazzarone capped off the six-run inning with an RBI single to left field.
The Hokies scored two more runs in the top of the fifth off a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Lyla Blackwell to extend their commanding 13-2 lead.
Despite the Orange scoring in the first inning, Mazzone controlled the game and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings pitched.
