BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 11/14 Virginia Tech (47-11, 18-6 ACC) fell to No. 18/18 LSU (39-17, 13-11 SEC), 8-0 (6), in the Winners Bracket of the Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park.
The Hokies will face the winner of Akron/South Alabama on Saturday night at 6 p.m. ET.
How It Happened
The game was scoreless through the first inning as an unassisted double play from Annika Rohs got the Hokies out of an early jam to end the inning.
LSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second after capitalizing on four walks by Emma Mazzarone in the inning. A two-run home run and a sacrifice fly gave the Tigers a three-run advantage, but Nora Abromavage’s catch at the warning track prevented further damage.
Avery Layton entered the circle for the Hokies in the bottom of the second and despite giving up a sacrifice fly, the true freshman held the Tigers scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when an RBI double put LSU up 4-0.
The Tigers threatened once again in the bottom of the fifth, but a spectacular catch at the warning track from Addison Foster kept it a 4-0 game.
LSU scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the run-rule victory. Two RBI singles, a fielding error and a sacrifice fly saw four runs cross the plate for the Tigers to make it an 8-0 game.
