BLACKSBURG – Nora Abromavage walked it off for the Hokies as her two-run blast propelled No. 13/16 Virginia Tech (39-9, 13-6 ACC) to a 6-5 victory over North Carolina (31-16, 9-13 ACC) on Friday night at Tech Softball Park.
Trailing 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Michelle Chatfield found herself on base after drawing a walk. After taking the first strike, Abromavage launched her 15th home run of the season to right field to secure the 6-5 lead.
How It Happened
UNC took a 1-0 lead off a home run before Tech punched back with a solo shot by Michelle Chatfield – her 10th of the season – in the bottom of the fourth. Rachel Castine kept the momentum up with a first-pitch RBI double to right center to make it a 2-1 Tech lead.
A two-RBI single by the Tar Heels put them back in front, but the Hokies took the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Jordan Bishop got hit by a pitch to bring in the tying run. Shortly after, Addison Foster drew the bases-loaded walk to put Tech ahead, 4-3.
North Carolina scored two runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, and Chatfield on second after a walk, Nora Abromavage launched her 15th home run of the season to earn the 6-5 comeback win for the Hokies.
Bree Carrico pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just five hits with five strikeouts. Emma Mazzarone threw one inning of relief and struck out three batters.
