BLACKSBURG – No. 10 Virginia Tech (38-6, 12-4 ACC) opened the series with a 10-2 run-rule win over Georgia Tech (27-23, 8-11 ACC) on Friday night at Tech Softball Park.
Up 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on second, Jordan Lynch hit her team-leading 14th home run of the year to clinch the 10-2 run-rule win.
How It Happened
Georgia Tech capitalized on two walks from Emma Mazzarone in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the early deficit did not phase the Hokies.
With Jordan Lynch and Nora Abromavage on first and second, respectively, in the bottom of the first, Kylie Aldridge drilled her first pitch over the right field fence to give Tech an early 3-1 lead.
Tech struck again in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Zoe Yaeger ripped a double down the left field line to bring them both home. Lily Pallante scored from second on a Yellow Jacket error, and Rachel Castine delivered an RBI single up the middle to cap off a four-run inning for the Hokies.
The Yellow Jackets scored one more run in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-2, but the Hokies responded immediately.
Mazzarone helped herself out with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to bring home Lyla Blackwell. After Addison Foster hit a double down the right field line, Lynch hit a walk-off home run to left center to end the game at 10-2 through six innings.
Pitching the complete game, Mazzarone recorded five strikeouts and walked just two batters for her 11th win of the season.
