White team wins tight affair Saturday at Lane Stadium

BLACKSBURG – The White squad earned a 30-21 victory in the Virginia Tech Spring Game presented by Eagle Construction, Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium. At the conclusion of the four quarters, White held a 21-12 lead and the additional place kicking competition led to the final score of 30-21.

Head coach James Franklin's first foray into coaching on Worsham Field brought with it a bevy of excitement with scores of fans turning out clad in maroon and orange.

The Maroon team began the game with possession of the ball and promptly went down the field in eight plays that culminated with a Que'Sean Brown 14-yard touchdown reception from Ethan Grunkemeyer's pass to take a 7-0 lead.

The White squad got on the board in the middle of the second quarter with a Will Love field goal from 48 yards, which was answered by the Maroon team and veteran kicker John Love who made a 27-yard field goal. Will completed the scoring in the opening half with a 44-yard effort to make the score 12-7 in favor of Maroon.

The second half featured stout defense from the White team which held Maroon to a total of 220 yards for the afternoon and zero second half points.

White's two touchdowns came via the air as Kelden Ryan connected with Chanz Wiggins on a 20-yard score in the third quarter and Cam Sparks hauled in a two-yard pass from Bryce Baker to secure the victory.

On the defensive front, the White team secured seven sacks, with Jason Abbey's 1.5 leading the way. Amauri Polydor had seven total tackles, with three of those being solo efforts. For Maroon, both Antwone Santiago and Joshua Clarke made seven tackles.
