CARY, N.C. – The Hokies take down Louisville, 4-2, in the first round of the ACC Championship on Tuesday morning.

The day started with a doubles win from Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu on Court 1, as they defeated Berta Miret and Elena Noguero, 6-2.

The momentum continued into Court 3 as freshmen Elizaveta Castillo and Alston Myatt won a nailbiter in a double-digit tiebreaker. The duo was down 6-2 in the tiebreak before winning four straight match points to bring it to 6-6. They continued to fend off another three match points before ultimately winning 13-11.

With the doubles point in the Hokies’ favor, Tech kept up the energy in singles. Linda Ziets-Segura found the second Tech point with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Rebekkah Gaines on Court 6.

The Cardinals took a point back with a sweep on Court 3. The Hokies found their third point from Uslu in a three-set reverse sweep of Alice Otis. Uslu went down 6-4 in the first set before returning to win 6-1, 6-2 in the final two sets.

Yet again, Louisville closed the gap in the match, taking Court 5 in three sets over Tech’s Myatt. Myatt won the first set 6-3, but fell 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third.

Gamretkaia found the clinching win on Court 2 with a sweep of Germany Davis. Gamretkaia was down 5-3 in both sets but battled twice to bring the match to the tiebreaker. She ultimately won the match 7-6(5), 7-6(6).
