Virginia Tech to face North Carolina in first round of ACC Championships on Wednesday

The first-round matchup will be the Hokies and Tar Heels’ third meeting this season.

CARY, N.C. – Virginia Tech (6-15, 3-10 ACC) begins play at the ACC Tournament as the fourteenth seed, taking on eleventh-seeded North Carolina (13-10, 6-7 ACC) in the first round on April 15 at 12:30 p.m. The tournament is set to run from April 14-19 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The Hokies and Tar Heels have met twice this season, North Carolina taking the first match and Virginia Tech taking the second. 

In their first meeting of the season, North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 4-0 in a non-conference match during ITA Kickoff Weekend. In their second meeting of the season, the Hokies hosted the Tar Heels and won 4-2 on March 13. 

The Hokies have found three ACC victories this season, two of which coming over ranked opponents. Tech's first ranked victory came over then-ranked No. 65 North Carolina. In the Hokies' second-to-last match of the season, they defeated then-ranked No. 17 Notre Dame, who has been named the three-seed of the tournament.

Virginia Tech closed out its regular season last Thursday, April 9, falling to No. 3 Virginia at home.

At the time of release, Virginia Tech is currently unranked and North Carolina is ranked No. 42. 

Upon victory, the Hokies will play sixth-seeded Clemson at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.
